The Lexus ES 350, the fifth generation of the model that spurred the growth of the entry luxury segment, continues to blur the line between 'entry luxury' and 'prestige-luxury' in many ways. The ES 350 carries into 2009 adding a new color to its palette, the vibrant Matador Red Mica replaces Royal Ruby Metallic. The ES 350's aluminum 3.5-liter V6 produces 272 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 254 lb.-ft. peak torque at 4,700 rpm. The chain-driven camshafts employ Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (Dual VVT-i) for optimal performance and efficiency at all engine speeds. VVT-i also improves fuel efficiency and helps lower exhaust emissions. A stainless-steel dual-exhaust system reduces backpressure at high rpm to enhance performance.

The Exhaust Heat-Recovery System reduces engine warm-up time, thus allowing it to stop earlier, more often, and for longer periods. This accounts for a more than 7% increase in efficiency at low temperatures. Pairing ingenuity with efficiency, regenerative braking converts braking energy into electricity to recharge the batteries, while the enhanced Electronically Controlled Braking (ECB) System is lighter, smaller and uses up to 29% less power than our previous regenerative braking system.

The Lexus RX 400h was the first full hybrid luxury-utility vehicle when it was introduced in 2005. The RX hybrid received styling and equipment enhancements for 2008 and carries into 2009 unchanged. The RX 400h hybrid combines the power of a 3.3-liter V6 gasoline engine with that of an electric drive motor to deliver performance on par with some V8-powered luxury SUVs, but with better fuel efficiency. In the all-wheel-drive model only, an additional, rear-mounted electric-drive motor/generator provides on-road, all-wheel-drive capability.

The Lexus GX460 is a gilded version of the Toyota 4Runner, a mall-cruising shopping-utility vehicle with the chops for off-road adventure. Both trucks have been significantly redesigned for 2010 and continue to share the same body-on-frame construction and solid rear axle. But whereas the 4Runner more or less embraces its off-road pretensions, the GX hides its ruggedness under a veneer of civility and opulence.

The full hybrid Lexus Hybrid Drive system that powers the LS 600h has a new ECO mode, which modifies the throttle action and performance of the air conditioning system to support fuel-efficient driving. The LS 600h is newly equipped with larger, 380mm ventilated front disc brakes with six-piston callipers, rotors and pads developed jointly with specialist manufacturer Brembo. The pads are designed for quieter performance with less vibration and give fade-free high-speed stopping power. Further development of the Lexus Hybrid Drive system has been revised to meet Euro V exhaust emissions standards, but with no change to the car's performance: the combination of the 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine and 165kW electric motor produces a maximum 439bhp and 520Nm of torque, giving nought to 62mph acceleration in 6.3 seconds.
