Redesigned for 2006, the Civic coupe grew externally and internally to the point where it is almost a midsize car. A 2009 update gave it a mildly revised look both inside and out, accentuated on the exterior by a new set of head and tail lamps, as well as a modified front fascia that incorporates a honeycomb-style grille. Available with just one engine, the Civic offers either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. The 1.8-liter single-overhead cam four-cylinder pumps out 140 horsepower at 6,320 rpm and 128 lb-ft. of torque at 4,300 rpm and, in automatic guise, averages up to 25 mpg around town and 36 mpg on the highway.

The 2010 Honda Civic lineup has its bases covered with technologically advanced Civic Sedan and Coupe models, a Civic Hybrid, a high-performance Civic Si and a dedicated natural gas-powered Civic GX. All Civics were recently enhanced inside and out for the 2009 model year with new exterior styling, colors and increased availability of tech-friendly features. For 2010, the entire range of Civics remains largely unchanged. Four engine and four transmission choices range from a 140-horsepower, 1.8-liter i-VTEC engine (Civic DX, DX-VP, LX, EX and EX-L), with either a 5-speed manual or an available 5-speed automatic transmission, to a 197-horsepower, 2.0-liter i-VTEC engine (Civic Si) with a 6-speed manual transmission.

Interior volume has increased so much that the EPA now classifies the Accord as a full-size car, compared to the previous generation's mid-size ranking. The two 2.4-liter four-cylinders generate 177 and 190 horsepower and achieve identical fuel mileage, 22 miles per gallon in the city and 31 on the highway. Both engines come with a standard five-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. The V6 option is a 3.5 liter with 268 horsepower and Honda's Variable Cylinder Management, which can shut off three cylinders under light load for better fuel economy. It comes with only the five-speed automatic transmission and gets 19 mpg city, 29 mpg highway.

The new Fit builds on the last-generation's sporty nature and high efficiency, but grows in virtually every dimension. While buyers in Japan can choose from either a 1.3-liter or 1.5-liter powerplant, only the latter is offered in the U.S. New for 2009, owners can now choose between front and all-wheel drive. Transmission choices for the new Fit include a five-speed automatic, a five-speed manual and a CVT automatic. Honda has stretched the Fit's wheelbase by 2 inches and moved the A-pillars forward by about 5 inches, adding to the car's interior space. The Fit's track has also grown by 2 inches. The added space allows for "Ultra Seats," which can be moved into four different configurations -- including Refresh mode which turns the Fit's interior into a bed.

Top models are dressed up further with 18-inch alloy wheels with low-profile tires, a rear spoiler and dual chrome exhaust. The base motor is a 2.4-liter 190-horsepower four-cylinder with 16 valves and Honda's i-VTEC variable-valve technology. This is more than enough power to move around the car's 3,221 curb weight. A 3.5-liter 268-horsepower V6 is also offered. Variable Cylinder Management, which shuts off three of the cylinders under light-load conditions, is standard on the EX-L automatic but not available on the EX-L with six-speed manual shifter. At around 3,500 pounds, the V6 car is heavier than the four-cylinder but the added power more than makes up for it.

Equipped with a high-performance engine, slick-shifting transmission and racing-inspired chassis, Honda's S2000 roadster caters to the enthusiast. Since its launch in 1999, the S2000 has been best known for its high-revving powerplant, a 2.2-liter four-cylinder with 237 horsepower and a lofty 7,800 rpm redline. This engine has been acclaimed for its high horsepower per liter of displacement (at 107.7 it easily breaks through the remarkable threshold of 100), especially because Honda's engineers accomplished this without the aid of turbocharging or supercharging. The S2000's engine is normally aspirated. The S2000's power is transmitted to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential.
