The CL63 AMG, the lesser of two powerful large AMG-tuned Mercedes-Benz coupes, sits somewhere between excessive and grandiose on the scale of high-end cars. With 518 horsepower on tap at 6800 rpm, the nearly 4,500 pound two-door Mercedes-Benz is hardly sluggish, despite tipping the scales at about double what a subcompact weights. 465 pound-feet of torque from the 6.2 liter V8 and a 7-speed automatic transmission help ensure that the CL63 has ample power in any situation.

The ML 63 further expands the AMG portfolio to a performance vehicle the whole family can enjoy. With AMG's heavily tuned and massaged hand-built 6.3-liter V8, this 510 horsepower SUV is a force to be reckoned with. With an impressive 465 pound-feet. of torque and a seven-speed automatic transmission, the ML 63 is always a strong performer, though torque peaks at a relatively high 5,200 rpm.

Mercedes-Benz's S63 AMG occupies the third-highest strata on the three-pointed star's sedan hierarchy. The S63 is the lesser of Mercedes' two AMG-massaged S-Class sedans, though with a 518-horsepower, 6.3-liter V8, it's certainly no slouch. And with a hefty 456 lb-ft. of torque on tap and a AMG-modified seven-speed automatic, it's clearly a world-class performance sedan. The S63's V8 is assembled by hand by AMG technicians and it's essentially the same unit that's featured in a few other AMG-badged Mercedes vehicles. Like the other AMG-badged cars, the S63 features a full bodykit and unique 20' wheels.

The SLK 55 AMG is a high-performance variant of the successful SLK-Class roadster from Mercedes-Benz. As with all AMG models, the SLK 55 sports wider fenders, a lower stance, quad tailpipes, enlarged air intakes, and, of course, a more powerful engine. The SLK 55 was first introduced in 2005 and was updated for the 2010 model year and beyond. The car's 5.5L V8 is unchanged with an output of 355 horsepower at 5750 rpm and 376 pound-feet of torque at 4000 rpm.

Mercedes-Benz upgraded its now-legendary top-end roadsters for 2010 by giving the previous model a substantial facelift designed to reflect the German automaker's current design philosophy. Mercedes replaces the entry-level (or second-from-top, depending on your perspective) AMG-modified roadster, the SL 55, with a more powerful, larger-displacement SL 63. That '63' denotes the AMG-designed 6.3 liter V8 now under the hood. This motor, the first designed in-house by AMG, puts out 525 horsepower, a 10 horsepower bump from the outgoing SL 55. Torque, however, is down to 465 lb-ft. from 531. The new, naturally aspirated V8 replaces a supercharged 5.5-liter V8.

Powered by the same supercharged 5.5 liter V8 as the coupe, the SLR roadster pumps out 617 horsepower at 6,500 RPM and 575 lb-ft. of torque at 3,250 RPM. The V8 is actually produced and developed by Mercedes' in-house tuner, AMG, though AMG badging is absent from the SLR. A five-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters puts the power to the rear wheels and helps the SLR hit 60 miles per hour in a handful of ticks over three seconds.

Initially designed for rugged off road use, the basis for the G55 AMG is the four wheel drive, body-on-frame, dual solid-axle G-Class four door utility vehicle. A far cry, performance-wise, from the military vehicle from which it was derived, the 2008 G55 features a supercharged version of AMG's 5.5 liter V8 that pumps out 493 horsepower at a peak of 6,100 RPM. That motor is hooked up to a five-speed automatic transmission, rather than the seven-speed used in so many other AMG vehicles because of the five-speed's significant strength.

For 2009, the venerable G-Class is fitted with a new three-bar front grille and chrome grille guard, and the G500 is being replaced by the new 382-horsepower G550 model, which features the latest Mercedes-Benz double-overhead-camshaft variable-valve-timing engine technology. The G550 joins the high-performance G55 AMG, which also boasts more power this year – up to an impressive 500 horsepower. The G550 can be identified by new 18-inch, five-twin-spoke alloy wheels, while the G55 AMG gets larger 19-inch AMG five-spoke wheels.

The CL550 is powered by a 5.5-liter V8 pumping out 382 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Optional equipment includes ventilated seats, Night View Assist, adaptive cruise control and an AMG Sport package, among a few other items. Resting just below the top-end CL65 AMG super coupe is the CL600. The CL600 is hardly lacking in power, luxury or panache. The optional equipment listed above for the CL550 comes standard on the CL600. A 5.5 liter version of the CL65's V12 puts out 510 horsepower and 512 pound-feet of torque through its 5-speed automatic transmission, still more than sufficient to make the CL600 faster and thirstier than almost anything else on the road.

Mercedes-Benz's E-Class range has long been the automaker's bread-and-butter lineup. A direct descendent of the rattly, yet long-lasting diesel sedans of the '70s and early '80s, the E-Class has seen considerable evolution over the years, leading to the highly refined vehicles of today. Engine performance and fuel economy has been improved, starting from the base model up. As before, the E350 offers 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the V8 E500 cranks out 382 hp at 6000 rpm and 391 lb-ft between 2800 and 4800 rpm.

Available in R320 CDI diesel and R350 gasoline variants, the R-Class is pared down by two models from 2007 with the deletion of the top-range R63 AMG and the V8 R500. All variants now feature a standard AMG-badged bodykit and 18' wheels, which makes the R320 CDI the only diesel-engined Mercedes-Benz to feature AMG equipment. The R320 CDI features standard all-wheel-drive and Mercedes' 3.0 liter V6 turbodiesel engine, which puts out 215 horsepower and 298 lb-ft. of torque and uses a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Swoopy where its E-Class platform-mate is upright, the CLS550 is the E550's sexy alter ego. Though mechanically identical to the E550, the CLS550 adds a significant dose of style to the more plebian, conventional E550, both inside and out. Powered by the same 382-horsepower, 391 lb.-ft. 5.5-liter V8 as the E550, the CLS550 is a smooth, torquey machine. A 7-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode provides fast, responsive shifts. The CLS550 received its current engine in 2007 when it replaced the less powerful CLS500.

Among its other introductions earlier at the New York International Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz showed a mildly facelifted 2010 GL-Class SUV. The major highlight for the luxury SUV is the addition of a new model, the GL350 Bluetec, which features a very modestly upgraded diesel engine. The GL350 Bluetec’s V6 diesel engine puts out 210 horsepower and 400 lb-ft. of torque and is capable of 23 mpg on the highway. That’s just 2 lb-ft. of torque more than the outgoing model and the horsepower and highway mpg ratings are unchanged.

Redesigned for the 2010 model year, the SL-Class remains the most premium Mercedes roadster. The two available models for the U.S. market are the SL550 and SL600, while Europeans shoppers can also opt for the lesser SL350 and SL280. The SL550 and SL600's engines remain unchanged. The former has a 5.5-liter V8 delivering 382 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 391 pound-feet of torque between 2,800 and 4,800 rpm. The latter is motivated by a 517 horsepower twin-turbo V12, delivering 612 pound-feeet of torque from 1900 rpm up to 3500 rpm. Both models now have factionally better fuel economy.

The Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG is the most potent version of the German automaker's C-Class sedan. The car delivers a whopping 457 horsepower, putting it comfortably ahead of BMW's all-new M3. With that amount of performance on tap, and a price to match the M3, Mercedes looks to steal at least a few sales away from its cross-country rival. In typical AMG fashion, the C63 features large performance-oriented tires and wheels, an aggressive bodykit, a much sportier interior, and suspension and chassis improvements. Unlike the M3's small displacement V8, the C63 uses a big 6.2L V8. The C63's powerplant is good for 443 lb-ft of torque and 457 horsepower. The torque curve of the engine is just as impressive as its output:

In addition to interior and exterior refinements, the new S550 and S600 come with a slew of new and improved high-tech systems, including safety and convenience features. Mercedes-Benz used its press conference at the 2009 New York Auto Show to reveal a new version of the high-performance E63 AMG Sedan for the 2010 model year onward. Based on the redesigned E-Class, this German hotrod is powered by Mercedes' familiar 32-valve 6.2-liter V8 which generates an amazing 518 horsepower and 485 pound-feet of torque. This model makes an additional 9 horsepower over its predecessor. The E63 AMG should get from zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds, on its way to an electronically limited 155 mph. With amazing acceleration like this it's no wonder Mercedes offers an optional set of carbon-ceramic brakes.

Mercedes-Benz reinvented the idea of a stylish, four-door, premium coupe when the German automaker released the CLS in 2004. Last year, the AMG-tuned CLS got a significant upgrade when the AMG-designed and developed 6.3-liter V8 engine was shoehorned under the hood. The first AMG-designed engine, the 6.3-liter V8, is carried over from 2009, good for 507 horsepower along with 465 lb.-ft. of torque under the hood of this shapely sedan. Its V8 burble is made louder than last year's car thanks to a less restrictive exhaust installed for 2009.
