The S40 is Volvo's entry-level sedan based on the P1 platform. It fills a near-luxury niche below the BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C-Class. The S40 has many similarities to the Mazda3 and European Ford Focus, due to a shared platform. However, the S40 is more expensive and better equipped than both those vehicles. In the U.S., the car can be ordered with front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. What's more, customers have a choice of two engines and two transmissions -- a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic with Geartronic manual shifting.

The Volvo V50 shares a platform with the S40 sedan and C30 hatchback. V50 buyers have their choice of two trim levels. The base 2.4i delivers alloy wheels, a sunroof, a power driver seat, a leather-trimmed tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, Bluetooth, a six-CD changer and full power accessories. The T5 AWD R-Design's additions include sporty exterior and interior styling cues, a sport-tuned suspension, automatic climate control, heated front seats and leather upholstery. The options list includes active bi-xenon headlights and a blind-spot warning system. Additionally, the T5 AWD R-Design can be equipped with a premium Dynaudio sound system and a navigation system.

The 2010 Volvo S80's options have been revised, including a few new features and a reorganization of packages. Notably, the Sport package has been broken up into stand-alone options for the V8 model, while its sport-tuned suspension is available on the T6 as part of the new Dynamic package. All S80s get a revised front grille, chrome trim accents and dual exhaust tips, while the base model gets snazzier interior trim. Though Volvo has made big strides in the past few years to rid itself of its stodgy image, the 2010 Volvo S80 reminds us what we used to expect from the Swedish automaker: safe and comfortable but a little dull to look at and drive. As Volvo's flagship sedan, the S80 packs all the luxury and technology features the company has to offer, but it lacks the sophistication and premium feel of other midsize luxury sedans. Often, it can seem like a really nice Volvo rather than a premium vehicle that strives for something greater.

The Volvo C30 is a two-door hatchback that seats four people. It is available in two trim levels: T5 and T5 R-Design. Standard equipment includes alloy wheels, a 50/50-split rear seat, full power accessories, a tilt/telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, a CD audio system and the full docket of Volvo's safety systems. The T5 R-Design adds bigger wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, exclusive exterior and interior styling, cruise control and a 10-speaker surround-sound audio system with satellite radio. Many but not all of these features are available as options for the base T5. Notable additional options include leather upholstery and a hard-drive-based navigation system.

As the mainstay of Volvo's quintessential leadership of the premium wagon sector, the V70 embodies more than five decades of continuous wagon refinement and improvement. For 2010, a new R-Design model brings a dynamic look to the latest generation V70 that made its debut two years ago. Among the features that distinguish the new 3.2 R-Design is silk metal finish grille trim with the R-Design logo, a tailgate spoiler, black aluminum window trim, silk metal outside mirror trim, 18-inch 'Cratus' alloy wheels and sport chassis settings. On the inside, the cabin is treated to a watch dial instrument cluster, unique Deco inlays, sport leather seating surfaces with the R-Design logo and sport pedals, gearshift knob and floor mats.

Volvo launched an all-new entry-level crossover for 2009 called the XC60. The Swedish automaker describes the car as the "safest Volvo ever," which says a lot coming from a company that built is reputation on just that. The model is a direct answer to Acura's RDX, BMW's X3 and Infiniti's EX 35. It is based very closely on the popular XC60 concept vehicle. The new XC60 is being launched with a choice of three engines: the turbocharged T6 which produces 285 horsepower, and two variants of the D5 turbodiesel -- for Europe -- producing 185 and 163 horsepower respectively. All Wheel Drive (AWD) is fitted as standard.

The Volvo C70 is based on the same platform used for the S40 sedan and V50 wagon. It comes in one body style only -- a convertible with a power-retractable hardtop. When the C70's steel roof is up, it gives the car coupelike styling, added rigidity and better noise isolation than a soft top. When the roof-lowering process is started, the C70's dual-hinged trunk lid opens in a reverse motion and the roof pieces arc backward and stack inside the trunk. Overall, the process is seamless and takes about 30 seconds to complete.

Volvo continues to refine its segment-defining XC70 crossover. All-new two years ago, the XC70 is available in two models for 2010. The XC70 3.2 AWD offers a new PZEV (Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle rating) version of its naturally aspirated 3.2-liter 6-cylinder engine. Compared to the unchanged ULEV version, the PZEV produces slightly less horsepower (225 vs. 235), with the benefits of reduced emissions and increased fuel economy estimates. The T6 features a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that delivers 281 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. Maximum torque is on tap from just 1,500 rpm and remains available all the way up the rev range, resulting in quick acceleration and smooth drivability.

Volvo's XC90 is the Swedish automaker's first ever SUV offering. The XC90 is similar in size and purpose to the Volkswagen Touareg, Porsche Cayenne, and Infinit FX. The launch of the mid-size crossover also marked Volvo's first production use of its 4.4 liter Yamaha V8 engine. The V8 model delivers 311 horsepower at 5850 rpm and peak torque of 325 pound-feet at 3900 rpm. The inline-six cylinder model offers 235 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 236 pound-feet of torque at 3200 rpm. It is offered with all-wheel-drive only. The XC90 carries five passengers in its standard configuration, and can hold seven people with the optional third row of seating.
